Princess Emeraude, who has been maintaining the peace and unity of Cephiro through her strong prayer and inner strength, is captured by the priest, Zagato, her most trusted Guardian. With the last of her powers, Princess Emeraude summons the three girls to Cephiro in hopes of saving it from destruction.

Cephiro is a magical world which materializes from the will power of its inhabitants. When Princess Emeraude prays for Cephiro to be a place of peace and tranquility, it is her will power which transforms Cephiro into a serene paradise. But when she is taken away and held captive, the inhabitants of Cephiro become worried and afraid. It is this fear which creates and unleashes evil forces upon this once idyllic Garden of Eden.

In Cephiro, Guru Clef waits for the three girls, Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu. On arrival, he tells them why they have been summoned to Cephiro, and they can not return home until their mission is completed. Their mission, as the Legendary Magic Knights, is to awaken the Machine Gods and restore Cephiro to its former glory. Guru Clef gives each of the girls special magical powers. But before he can explain how to use these powers, they are attacked by Zagato's high priestess, Alcyone. Before sending them off on their mission, Guru Clef tells them that only by using their inner strength will be able to protect themselves against the evil forces that threaten Cephiro.

Uncertain as to what lies ahead, the three girls boldly carry on with their mission. Each episode shows the girls growing up as they meet and overcome each new challege. With each victory, their armour and magical powers gain strength, preparing them to fight the greatest enemy of all, Zagato.

A kind, honest and simple girl. She is the shortest of the Magic Knights, but she has amazing jumping power. She has been learning kendo since she was really small. She uses flame magic.

Her name means "Light of the lion shrine". She has red pony tail hair and red eyes. Her school uniform consists of a black skirt, a red jacket, a big white bow in front, red socks and black shoes. Energetic and almost always happy. She cares for her friends very much and gets along with Mokona the best. Naive, she is often mistaken for as a younger girl

Umi, Ryuuzaki

On the surface, she is a bit selfish and a very outspoken girl. Inside she is very considerate of her friends. She is part of her school's fencing team and is skilled with a rapier. She uses water magic.

Her name means "Sea of the dragon-blossom". She is the tallest of the Magic Knights, has long light blue hair, and blue eyes. Her school uniform consists of a blue skirt over black tights and a blue jacket with an orange tie. She also has blue boots. She's short-tempered and she over-reacts to anything strange or unpleasant. She has trouble dealing with her surrounding She constantly fights with Mokona. She is also somewhat clueless when it comes to men.

She is always smiling on the outside. On the inside she's a decent strategist. Her manner of speaking can be somewhat blunt. She uses wind magic.

Her name means "Wind of the phoenix-temple". Fu has shoulder length, light brown hair, green eyes, and wears glasses. Her school uniform is green skirt, green jacket, red tie/small bow-kinda-thing and brown shoes. She has an occasional morbid sense of humor ("Don't worry. you'll go unconscious before you hit the ground and when you wake up you'll have one of these (halo)." All this with a large grin.). She has a tendency to state the obvious and she addresses everyone with unfailing politeness (including her enemies and even Mokona) .She is very smart, logical, and kind in nature. She almost never gets mad. She gets swept off her feet by Ferio.
